Welcome to Liveable Neighbourhoods 2026

There are far too many streets across the UK that are poorly designed and not fit for purpose. Too many streets that are car-dominant, unsafe, polluted, noisy, swathed in concrete and cluttered. This is causing myriad problems: congestion; road danger; pavement obstructions; poor air quality; and low resilience to climate change.

But an alternative is available, one where the needs and wellbeing of people are considered, where it is safe to walk, wheel, cycle and scoot, where the accessibility of all users is recognised. Schemes are being rolled out that enable parents and children to safely travel to and from school, removing dangerously parked and idling cars outside schools. A range of measures are coalescing to create people-friendly environments: pedestrianised areas, safer crossings and junctions, kerbside reallocation, segregated cycle lanes, modal filters that stop rat running, lower speed limits, moving traffic enforcement, bus priority measures, rain gardens, more trees and seating – areas that encourage community cohesion and tackle isolation.

Despite efforts by a vocal minority to maintain the status quo, the ‘quiet revolution’ is gathering pace, thanks to council officers, cabinet members, private sector partners, campaign groups and academics. Find out how you can be a part of this movement at the seventh Liveable Neighbourhoods conference, hosted by Camden Council and organised by Landor LINKS in partnership with Transport for London.

There will be updates on policy, new data supporting the case for change and advice on how to secure funding for schemes. TfL will offer an update on its new Walking and Wheeling Action Plan along with other strategies. As well as presentations, discussion and debate, there will be an exhibition showcasing the services offered by leading suppliers, plus a walking tour of the Holborn Liveable Neighbourhood.

What's going to be discussed:

  • Building a strong narrative: how to inform, involve and inspire communities

  • How a cross-departmental approach and new partnerships can help unlock the funding needed for schemes

  • 'Quick wins' that could dramatically improve walking infrastructure

  • Small measures that can go a long way when creating better streets

  • Healthy Hospital Streets: Turning a traffic-dominated street into a child-friendly, healing environment

  • Building the case for people-friendly streets y providing solid data

  • Climate resilience and adaptation

  • The case for side road zebra crossings

  • The benefits of bus priority measures

  • Creating safe routes between home and school

  • Transferring kerbspace from parked cars to other uses such as bus lanes, street trees, rain gardens and parklets

An inspirational programme with case studies

During the day there will be opportunities to share best practice in design, discuss common challenges and opportunities, to network, to make new contacts and to gain inspiration.
